Scott Heysell, MD, MPH

Director

Scott Heysell, MD, MPH, is the Thomas H. Hunter Chair of International Medicine, Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases, and serves as the Director of the Center for Global Health Equity.

Heysell is a UVA Health physician-scientist who studies infectious diseases and their impacts on public health in communities globally. Much of his clinical work has involved caring for people living with human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, and tuberculosis and related lung infections. He currently co-directs UVA Health’s Bronchiectasis and Non-tuberculosis Mycobacteria Care Center Network to improve patient’s experience with this form of chronic disease.

Heysell majored in English at Vanderbilt University before enrolling in medical school and earning a combined medical degree and master’s in public health from Oregon Health Sciences University. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Yale University, where he was selected as chief resident, then a Burroughs Wellcome Fund/ American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene fellowship in South Africa, before concluding an Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Virginia.

Heysell's global research supports partners to achieve their aims of reducing morbidity and mortality related to tuberculosis through correcting drivers such as poverty, and health systems management. His research group also studies how to maximize drug efficacy to improve treatment outcomes through clinical trials. The research infrastructure has grown training opportunities for U.S. and international students, postdoctoral scientists and junior faculty. The work is supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, Fogarty International Center, and numerous non-governmental organizations.

Heysell has received awards for outstanding faculty mentoring, faculty research and faculty clinical care awards from the Department of Medicine, and the Robert Koch Award for his work nationally. He is a former Vivian Pinn Scholar, and current Senior Fellow in the University’s Society of Fellows.
