Uganda
Mbarara National Referral Hospital, also called Mbarara Hospital, is a public hospital and one of three national referral hospitals in Uganda. Located in the small city of Mbarara in the south-west part of the country, it is a 600-bed hospital and the teaching hospital of Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Residents from UVA work on the inpatient general medical wards and in clinic seeing patients with a wide range of medical conditions. They work closely with medical residents and students from Uganda. Living accommodations are provided on-site.

Costa Rica
The Hospital Nacional de Niños is a large, tertiary care center located in the capital city of San José, Costa Rica. As the only pediatric hospital in the country, it serves as the national referral center for pediatric patients. The UVA Children's Hospital has had a relationship with the Hospital Nacional for over 30 years. The Hospital Nacional de José has over 300 beds and diverse inpatient and outpatient services spread over a wide-range of specialties. Residents will be matched with an outpatient or inpatient service, depending on availability and area of interest, for up to four weeks. Alternatively, residents may choose to arrange Spanish language training (approved by their supervisor) for up to two weeks followed by two weeks of clinical work.

Rwanda
- Location: University Teaching Hospital (CHUK), Kigali, Rwanda
- Duration: 4-8 weeks
- Language Requirement: None (Kinyarwanda is the native language, of Bantu origin. French was the predominant language taught in schools until recently when this switched to English. Knowledge of French can be helpful, but is not required.)
- Total cost estimated: $4500-$5000 for airfare and basic accommodations
