We support undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. In the program's 24 year history, our scholars have included students representing the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Data Science, the School of Architecture, the McIntire School of Commerce, the School of Education and Human Development, the School of Medicine, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the School of Law, the School of Nursing, the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and the UVA College at Wise. Scholars have included doctoral students in Economics and Religions Studies, undergraduates who have just completed their second, third, or first year, and medical students in the summer between their first and second year. We are deeply committed to interdisciplinary engagement and we are proud of the diversity of CGHE Scholars.
Do I apply through UVA Study Abroad or apply directly to CGHE?
CGHE collaborates with UVA Education Abroad on 4 distinct programs in Ghana, Nepal, Kenya, and Nicaragua.
Many students in UVA Education Abroad programs are eligible for multiple funding opportunities including the Walker Award, other scholarships and financial resources, and potentially, financial aid. We encourage you to explore and apply for available sources to support your engagement.
If you accepted into one of the CGHE-affiliated programs, you will automatically be considered for CGHE funding. There is no need to apply directly with CGHE.
Can you apply to CGHE and then get matched with a project, or can you develop your own research project and then apply to CGHE for funding?
Good question! One of the primary strengths of CGHE support work is strong faculty-student engagement in the context of strong research partnerships.
We encourage students find a UVA mentor with an available opportunity, develop a plan, and then submit an application to CGHE for funding.
Please contact CGHE if you are interested in finding a mentor, a research opportunity, or if you'd like to talk with a former CGHE scholar about their work.
What if I have an existing independent research project for which I am seeking support?
CGHE collaborates with students and their faculty mentors working in independent research projects to provide guidance and funding. If you are seeking support or advising for an existing or developing independent project, please contact CGHE@virginia.edu.
How can I find a UVA faculty mentor?
Please review previous projects and learn about the faculty mentors who have advised them or visit our global partners page to learn more about existing global partnerships.
Where will I work as a CGHE Scholar?
We encourage students to work with engaged, experienced UVA faculty leaders who support innovative global research and who collaborate with partner research institutions . Please review the CGHE affiliated opportunities in UVA Education Abroad or see the global partners page for more information.
How much is the award?
CGHE affiliated projects in UVA Education Abroad: After available sources of support such as the Walker Award and/or UVA Financial Aid are applied, CGHE will work to support the total cost of your CGHE Education Abroad program.
Independent Projects: The amount of funding varies depending on the scope and duration of the project, as well as the location.. Most students are supported with an award of $2,000-$6,000.
How much time does this take?
During the summer, students spend a range of 3 - 8 weeks directly engaged at a global partner site. These are meant to be immersive experiences of significant duration.
There is a standard engagement cycle inclusive of planning, applying for funding, compliance with UVA requirements for global engagement, and upon return, presenting at the CGHE symposium and mentoring the next cohort of scholars.
